Medical Transcription Training involves being taught the basics of medicine, pharmacology, physiology, pathology, anatomy, radiological techniques, and surgical procedures. Sharpening of English language skills, including grammar, forms an integral part of the training protocol. Trainees also gain knowledge about the American vocabulary (including phonetics), lifestyle, geography, etc. They are also made familiar with common medical reports and procedures involving a patient, his physician, and his insurance provider in a hospital or nursing home setting in the USA.

Practical training involves instruction regarding basic use and handling of computers, speed typing, as well as practice using the different software and hardware associated with medical transcription. As these basic skills are being obtained, the trainees also spend increasing periods of time per day listening to audio files containing recorded dictation while following simultaneously on their respective transcribed text documents. This helps the trainee to coordinate what they hear with what is already typed, making them familiar to particular doctors or particular types of medical reports. In time, they begin transcribing limited portions of recorded dictations for themselves, gradually increasing the quantity as they learn to maintain quality.
